Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezin

Imprisoned in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, conductor Rafael Schächter taught Verdi's Requiem to fellow prisoners from a single smuggled score; they sang it sixteen times, once before senior SS officials from Berlin and a delegation from the International Red Cross. Murry Sidlin's concert-drama Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín surrounds a complete performance of the Requiem with video testimony from survivors of that original chorus and footage from the 1944 Nazi propaganda film about the camp.
